PORTAGE — Clerk-treasurer Chris Stidham said juggling has become a way of life to him and his new role won’t really change anything.

Stidham, 33, graduated from Valparaiso University Law School in the spring, passed the bar this summer and recently took a part-time job with the law firm of Rhame & Elwood.

“I’ve been juggling the two for a while. I was doing my undergrad studies while I was executive director at Portage Economic Development Corp. and once you get into a grove, you learn to juggle,” he said.

Stidham said his part-time job of practicing family law with the firm won’t affect his job with the city. He’s been a law student since being elected in 2011.

He added that since his time in the city post, he has been able to cut the number of consultants and more work is being down by his office. He also pointed out it isn’t unusual for elected officials to hold two jobs. Mayor James Snyder has a mortgage business. Portage Township Trustee Brendan Clancy and his wife, Porter County Treasurer Michelle Clancy, own a bar.

“Many people successfully work multiple jobs, and elected officials are no different,” said Stidham.

Stidham said they made sure there were no conflicts with taking the job at the law firm where partner Ken Elwood also serves as the Portage City Council’s attorney.
